Slow Fashion in Color

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

Discover the A-Z of slow fashion.

The term slow fashion has been on the lips of critiques, designers and consumers alike and as the movement evolves and is weaved into our lifestyles it is important to know exactly what it means.

Slow fashion defined

In a world where over-consumption is the norm slow fashion addresses slowing down the fashion seasons and increasing the longevity of clothing by consciously investing in curated staples and signature transitional pieces that fit your unique style.

Does it then follow that you need to empty your closet and spend thousands on multiple "quality" pieces in a bid to join the increasingly popular movement? The answer would be a resounding no! This action completely contradicts what one is trying to achieve with this concept. The endgame thereof only includes a mound of debt with nothing to wear. A bit of a hyperbole but true non the less.

The conscious consumer

Some define the conscious consumer as those who are aware of the wasteful and harmful effects that mass production has on society and aims to avoid these practices. But conscious style is about more than just buying ethically made clothing from quality materials; which we have already established.

You as the consumer need to do some serious introspection to discover who you truly are and how you will implement your clothing in such a way to showcase this to the rest of the world; and only then can you make "conscious" purchases towards this end.

The easiest way to do this is to start with your existing wardrobe. We all have those few key pieces that we wear over and over and over again. And for good reason. Whether it be comfortable, quirky, classic or sultry; it describes you as a person. I like to think of clothes as the embodiment of one's soul.

Choosing the right pieces

Once you have established what is essentially your identity there are a few factors that one needs to keep in mind as you embark on this journey.

1. Your lifestyle

If you work a 9 to 5 job your wardrobe will look vastly different from say a stay at home mother's or a university student's. Practicality is key but it does not mean you have to compromise on style.

2. Your budget

Not all of us can afford high end brand names. That's a fact. But not all high end brand names are synonymous with the slow fashion movement.

Yes, pieces are of high quality but on average most of them introduce new trends every two weeks. Keeping up can be costly and you can lose sight of your ultimate goal which is to create your signature style.

Do keep in mind quality does not come cheaply but it does not have to be exorbitant either. Do a bit of research, look at some reviews, talk to fellow enthusiasts. You might be surprised about what you can find within your budget.

3. Less is more

The less you buy, the more you wear of what you have ensuring you get the most out of your wardrobe.

As the world tries to find ways to promote a more sustainable future slow fashion forms an integral part of it. But it is so much more than a minimalist concept. It is about discovering one's identity.

So be conscious. Not just of WHOM you choose to purchase from but of WHAT you choose to purchase and WHY you choose to make that purchase.
